Planetary events calendar for upcoming observing dates

A planetary events calendar is useful because the planets do not remain equally easy to observe throughout the year. Their apparent positions change as Earth and the other planets move around the Sun, creating repeating configurations such as opposition, solar conjunction and greatest elongation. The tool above scans planetary ephemerides for the selected year and turns those changing angles into a practical observing calendar. Instead of checking seven separate planets day after day, you can filter the year by planet, month or event type and quickly identify dates that deserve a closer look. The primary ephemeris reference for this tool is NASA/JPL's Horizons system. Horizons is designed to generate solar-system ephemerides for planets and many other bodies as a function of time and observing geometry. SpaceTracker.live requests geocentric planetary data and looks for local maxima and minima in solar elongation, then identifies the corresponding planetary configuration. The calendar is therefore based on changing sky geometry rather than a permanently typed list of dates. Event times shown by this page should be treated as practical calendar estimates from the ephemeris sampling interval; for professional or sub-hour work, open JPL Horizons and generate a higher-resolution ephemeris around the event.

What does opposition mean?

Opposition occurs for a planet outside Earth's orbit when the planet appears roughly opposite the Sun in our sky. Earth is then approximately between the Sun and the outer planet. For visual observers, opposition is often one of the most important dates of a planet's apparition because the object is generally visible for much of the night and is comparatively close to Earth. Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune can reach opposition. Mercury and Venus cannot, because their orbits are inside Earth's orbit and they never appear 180 degrees from the Sun as seen from Earth. When this calendar lists an opposition, use the date as a planning anchor and then check the planet's current altitude, rise/set behavior and brightness in Planets Visible Tonight.

Opposition does not mean every outer planet suddenly becomes easy to see with the naked eye. Jupiter and Saturn can be obvious, while Uranus and Neptune normally require optical aid and good sky conditions. Mars also changes dramatically from one opposition to another because its orbit is relatively eccentric. The calendar therefore reports the geometry, not a guarantee of visual appearance. If an opposition falls close to a bright Moon, for example, binocular or telescope observations of faint targets may be less comfortable. Conjunctions with the Sun and why planets disappear from view

A solar conjunction happens when a planet appears close to the Sun in the sky. For an outer planet this normally means the Sun lies roughly between Earth and the planet, so the planet becomes difficult or impossible to observe in the solar glare. Mercury and Venus can have two kinds of solar conjunction. At inferior conjunction, the inner planet passes approximately between Earth and the Sun. At superior conjunction, it is on the far side of the Sun. The tool uses the Sun–target–observer phase angle from the ephemeris to distinguish these two configurations for Mercury and Venus. A conjunction date is therefore often an observing warning rather than a recommended viewing night: the planet is transitioning between morning and evening visibility and is usually too close to the Sun for safe visual observing.

Never point binoculars or a telescope near the Sun unless the instrument is specifically equipped and operated for safe solar observation. A planet being close to the Sun is not a reason to search for it optically during daylight. For normal naked-eye or telescope planning, wait until the angular separation has increased and then use the site's Sunrise & Sunset tool and Twilight Times—to determine whether the planet will be sufficiently separated from bright twilight.

Greatest elongation of Mercury and Venus

For Mercury and Venus, the most useful calendar events are often greatest eastern and western elongation. Elongation is the apparent angle between a planet and the Sun as seen from Earth. Because Mercury and Venus orbit inside Earth's orbit, their elongation never reaches 180 degrees. Instead it grows to a maximum and then decreases again. At greatest eastern elongation the planet trails the Sun across the sky and is generally an evening object, setting after sunset. At greatest western elongation it leads the Sun and is generally a morning object, rising before sunrise. The exact visibility still depends strongly on the angle of the ecliptic to your local horizon, so two elongations with similar angular separation can produce very different observing conditions.

Mercury is especially sensitive to this geometry because it never travels very far from the Sun. A greatest elongation can be excellent from one hemisphere and disappointing from another. Venus travels farther from the Sun and is usually much easier to identify when it is well placed. After choosing an elongation date here, open Night Sky Tonight or Planets Visible Tonight close to that date to check the local direction, altitude and useful viewing window.

Close conjunctions between planets

The calendar also looks for close apparent approaches between the brighter planets. A planet-to-planet conjunction is an alignment in our line of sight: the two planets can appear near each other in the sky even though they remain separated by enormous physical distances in space. The tool compares geocentric ecliptic longitude and latitude from the ephemeris and flags a local minimum when the apparent separation falls within the calendar's close-conjunction threshold. These events can be visually striking because two bright planets may fit into the same binocular field or form an obvious pair to the naked eye. Their actual visibility, however, depends on how far the pair is from the Sun and whether they are above your horizon during darkness.

How to use the filters and calendar export

Choose a year first, then narrow the results by month, planet or event type. Selecting “Opposition” is useful when planning telescope observations of the outer planets. Selecting “Greatest Elongation” highlights the most favorable angular separations of Mercury and Venus. Selecting “Planetary Conjunction” shows close planet-to-planet approaches. The event cards display the UTC date, involved planet or planets, the relevant angle and a short observing interpretation. The “Export visible events” button creates an iCalendar file for the events currently shown by your filters, which can be imported into many calendar applications. Because the exported entries are planning reminders rather than alarms for an exact physical second, confirm the event again when the date approaches.
