GOES Satellite Tracker: Geostationary Weather Fleet Guide

GOES stands for Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite. The directory above groups catalogued GOES spacecraft so you can choose one and inspect its orbit. The fleet includes operational, backup and older objects, so appearing in the directory does not by itself establish current mission status.

GOES spacecraft are best known for continuous environmental monitoring from geostationary orbit. A selected tracker visualises where the satellite is calculated to be; NOAA systems provide the actual imagery, lightning, atmospheric and space-weather products.

How a geostationary fleet works

A geostationary satellite travels above the equator at roughly 35,786 kilometres altitude with an orbital period matching Earth's rotation. Operational east and west positions provide persistent views of large regions. Spare spacecraft can be moved or maintained at different longitudes.

Because the spacecraft moves with Earth's rotation, its map marker remains close to one longitude. Small north-south or east-west motion may reflect inclination, eccentricity, station keeping or the age of the element set.

How the calculation differs from weather products

Public orbital elements and SGP4 estimate the spacecraft platform's position. They do not contain cloud images, lightning detections or atmospheric measurements. The sensor data require reception, calibration, navigation and scientific processing before becoming an operational product.

This separation makes the tracker useful for teaching the architecture of a weather system: spacecraft orbit, instruments, ground segment and forecasting organisations have different jobs.

Limitations

The selected object may be operational, a backup, retired or relocating. SpaceTracker.live does not infer status from its orbital elements. Never use this page for weather warnings or emergency decisions.

Operational slots, backups and continuity

Weather services cannot pause when one spacecraft needs maintenance. GOES planning includes operational east and west positions, backup capability and transitions between generations. A directory may therefore show several spacecraft near geostationary altitude with different current roles. Comparing their longitudes introduces the idea of orbital slots and continuity planning. It also explains why an older satellite can remain catalogued and carefully positioned even when a newer spacecraft supplies the primary public products.
