The names describe the geometry of the illuminated portion as seen from Earth, not a physical shadow from Earth. Except during a lunar eclipse, the dark part of the ordinary lunar phase is simply the half of the Moon that is not illuminated by direct sunlight from our viewing angle.
Why Moon phase matters for stargazing
A bright Moon can dramatically reduce contrast in the night sky. The effect is most obvious for the Milky Way, faint constellations, comets and dim meteors. Primary phases and exact phase moments
New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon and Last Quarter are exact astronomical moments, even though calendars often display them as whole-day labels. Because the exact instant is the same worldwide but local time zones differ, a phase can fall on different local calendar dates in different countries.
