Which comets are visible tonight?

Comets change much more slowly than satellites but can vary strongly in brightness from week to week. This page uses a location-based comet planner to find objects that satisfy a useful nighttime altitude, solar elongation and Moon-separation threshold. The brightest candidates are shown first with estimated magnitude, best observing time, altitude and constellation. Most comets require binoculars or a telescope; only occasional bright comets become obvious to the unaided eye. A listed comet should therefore be read as an observing candidate rather than an assurance that it will look spectacular.

Understanding comet magnitude

Astronomical magnitude is a reverse scale: smaller numbers mean brighter objects. A comet near magnitude 4 or 5 may become a naked-eye target under dark skies, but diffuse comets can be harder to see than a star of the same quoted magnitude because their light is spread over a larger area. Comets around magnitude 8–10 are usually binocular or small-telescope targets, while fainter objects need larger instruments, dark skies or imaging. The planner magnitude is an estimate and real comet brightness can depart from predictions.

Best time and altitude

The best-time field identifies when a comet is favorably placed during the observing session. Higher altitude generally means less atmospheric extinction, less haze and fewer horizon obstructions. A comet only 10° above the horizon can be difficult even if its magnitude looks promising. Use the constellation name and sky map to identify the correct region, then star-hop from a bright reference star with binoculars or a telescope. Why comets move against the stars

A comet follows its own orbit around the Sun while Earth is also moving. The combined geometry causes the comet to shift from night to night against the background constellations. Nearby comets can move noticeably even during a single observing session. The planner includes an apparent motion rate and position angle for many objects, which is useful when comparing observations made at different times. Long-exposure imaging can reveal that motion more clearly than casual naked-eye viewing.

Moonlight and solar elongation

Comets are easier to see when they are well separated from the Sun in the sky and not lost in bright twilight. The tool also applies a minimum Moon separation because strong Moonlight can reduce contrast, especially for diffuse coma and tails. A comet close to the Sun may be physically bright but still impossible to observe safely because it is buried in daylight or twilight. Never point binoculars or a telescope near the Sun unless you are using equipment specifically designed for solar observing.

Where the comet data comes from

Observable-comet planning data is obtained server-side from the COBS Comet Observation Database planner, which provides location-aware best time, estimated magnitude, altitude, sky coordinates and constellation. SpaceTracker.live caches the response briefly to reduce repeated external requests. Comet brightness is inherently variable, so recent visual or instrumental observations can be more informative than a purely orbital magnitude model.

Planning a comet observing session

Begin with the brightest object in the table and note its best time, altitude and constellation. Use a dark location, allow your eyes to adapt and start with low magnification so the field of view is wide. Averted vision—looking slightly beside a faint diffuse object—can make the coma easier to detect.
