How Our Tracking Works
Earth-orbiting spacecraft are not tracked by directly communicating with the spacecraft.
Instead, orbital positions are calculated from available orbital-element data using established orbital-propagation methods.
For supported deep-space missions, SpaceTracker.live displays information derived from NASA/JPL Horizons ephemerides and presents that information through interactive mission visualizations.
Some displays update values frequently to provide an intuitive live-tracking experience.
However, calculated positions and visual scenes may include interpolation, compressed scales or other presentation techniques and should not be treated as mission-control data.
Our Data Philosophy
We believe space-tracking information should clearly identify where important underlying data comes from.
Depending on the feature, SpaceTracker.live may use or reference:
CelesTrak — orbital-element data for Earth-orbiting spacecraft.
SGP4 — mathematical orbital propagation used to estimate spacecraft positions from orbital elements.
NASA/JPL Horizons — ephemeris information used for supported deep-space missions.
OpenStreetMap contributors — geographic map information used in map-based tracking experiences.
These data sources are also identified on current SpaceTracker.live tracker pages and in the website footer.
Accuracy and Transparency
Space is dynamic.
Satellites maneuver, orbital elements are updated, external APIs may temporarily fail and observations depend on many environmental conditions.
For that reason, SpaceTracker.live aims to distinguish between:
- calculated position;
- source orbital data;
- geometric pass prediction;
- visual representation;
- actual naked-eye visibility.
Our trackers are intended primarily for educational and informational use rather than safety-critical or professional navigation.
Privacy by Design
Where possible, we try to keep user interaction straightforward.
For example, observer-location tools request browser GPS only when the visitor chooses the location function, and current tracker interfaces state that saved observer coordinates are stored in the browser.
