Golden hour and blue hour for your location

Golden hour is the low-Sun period around sunrise and sunset when light becomes warmer, shadows become longer and the contrast of a scene can change quickly. The Golden Hour Calculator above uses your saved observing location and selected date to estimate morning and evening windows from the Sun’s elevation rather than applying a fixed sixty-minute rule. That distinction is important because the Sun climbs and descends at different rates depending on latitude and season. In some locations a useful low-light interval can be much shorter than an hour; in others it can stretch considerably longer. The tool also provides blue-hour windows, when the Sun is just below the horizon and the sky often takes on cooler tones.

There is no single universal photographic definition of golden hour. Different photographers and apps use slightly different solar-elevation limits. SpaceTracker.live treats the window as a practical range around the horizon, approximately from a few degrees below the horizon to several degrees above it. That makes the result useful for planning while avoiding the false impression that nature changes at one exact minute. Cloud, haze, terrain and the direction your camera faces can have as much influence on the final light as the calculated solar angle.

Morning golden hour versus evening golden hour

Morning golden hour starts around dawn as the Sun approaches the horizon and continues after sunrise while the solar elevation remains low. The atmosphere scatters shorter wavelengths more strongly, and a long path through the atmosphere can produce warmer direct light when conditions are suitable. Evening golden hour runs through the reverse sequence before and around sunset. Photographers often prefer one or the other because of local geography: a mountain, coastline or city skyline can look completely different depending on whether the Sun is illuminating it from the east or west. What blue hour means

Blue hour generally refers to the twilight period when the Sun is below the horizon but enough indirect light remains to give the sky and landscape a cool blue appearance. Like golden hour, it is not a rigid astronomical category with one globally accepted boundary. The calculator uses a practical low-Sun interval within civil twilight so you can estimate when that look is most likely. The actual color can vary dramatically with aerosols, humidity, cloud layers, city lighting and camera white balance. A clear dry evening may look very different from a humid or dusty one even when the solar geometry is identical.

Blue hour can also overlap with the first appearance of bright stars, planets and the Moon. That makes it useful for “city plus sky” photography where you want artificial lights and celestial objects in the same frame. Golden hour is a planning window, not a weather forecast

A perfect solar angle does not guarantee attractive light. Thick cloud can block direct sunlight completely, while broken cloud can create dramatic shafts of light or colorful reflections. Smoke, dust and humidity can change the apparent color and intensity. Local terrain can also hide the Sun before the calculated geometric sunset or delay the moment it becomes visible after sunrise. Treat the time shown here as the astronomical foundation of your plan, then check local weather and the real horizon before committing to a viewpoint.

For night-sky photographers, golden hour is often only the first stage of a longer sequence. After sunset comes civil twilight, then nautical twilight, then astronomical twilight. That connected workflow is more useful than treating golden hour as an isolated photography timer.

Why the Sun’s elevation is the useful quantity

The clock time of sunrise and sunset changes with location, date and time-zone rules, but the visual character of low-angle sunlight is fundamentally related to the Sun’s position above or below the horizon. Calculating by solar elevation therefore provides a consistent physical basis for the window.
