How the best stargazing time is calculated

The best time to stargaze is not simply the darkest clock hour. This tool combines the Sun’s altitude, the Moon’s illumination and altitude, current hourly cloud cover, precipitation probability and atmospheric visibility. Each nighttime hour receives a practical observing score. Astronomical darkness receives the strongest positive weight, while thick cloud and a bright Moon above the horizon reduce the score. The highest-scoring period is shown as tonight’s recommended observing window. Because weather forecasts can change, use the result as a planning guide and refresh it shortly before going outside. The live sky map above then shows the Moon, planets and bright stars for the selected location so you can decide what to observe during that window.

Why cloud cover matters more than almost anything else

A perfectly dark astronomical night is useless if a solid cloud deck blocks the sky. For that reason, cloud cover is a major part of the score on this page. Thin high cloud can still reduce contrast around faint stars and the Milky Way, while broken cloud may leave useful gaps for bright planets and the Moon. The weather feed is taken from a current numerical forecast and is not a camera looking at your exact street, so local conditions can differ. If the score is good but clouds are moving quickly, check the hourly table and choose the clearest interval. How Moonlight changes a dark sky

The Moon can act like a natural source of light pollution. Near full phase it brightens the whole sky, especially when it is high above the horizon, and makes faint stars, nebulae and the Milky Way harder to see. Near new Moon, or when the Moon is below the horizon, the background sky becomes much darker. The tool therefore treats Moon illumination and Moon altitude together rather than using phase alone. A bright Moon that has already set may not interfere with late-night observing, while a first-quarter Moon can still affect the early evening. What counts as a good stargazing score

A high score means several useful conditions overlap: the Sun is far below the horizon, cloud cover is low, precipitation risk is small, visibility is reasonable and Moonlight is limited. A medium score can still be excellent for the Moon, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn or bright constellations because those targets tolerate more sky glow. A low score usually means bright twilight, heavy cloud, poor visibility or strong lunar interference. The score is intentionally practical rather than absolute; it does not know whether a building, tree, hill or streetlamp blocks your own horizon. Move to an open, darker location whenever possible and allow your eyes at least fifteen to twenty minutes to adapt.

Best targets when conditions are only average

Do not cancel an observing session automatically because the score is not excellent. Bright targets remain rewarding in imperfect conditions. The Moon shows craters and major maria through binoculars or a small telescope, Jupiter and Saturn can remain visible through moderate haze, and bright constellations are useful for learning the sky. If clouds are intermittent, use short clear intervals for bright planets rather than waiting for the faintest deep-sky objects. Why the recommended time changes by location

Sunset, twilight, Moon altitude and the weather forecast all depend on where you are. Two cities in the same country can have different cloud forecasts, while observers far apart in longitude experience darkness at completely different UTC times. Latitude also changes the seasonal length of night. This is why the page uses the selected observing location instead of a single global answer.
